A special message from George Galloway to
Bradford, West Yorkshire
I have a great affection for Bradford and
West Yorkshire – who couldn’t have.
Over the years I’ve been invited to speak at
huge meetings in the city and have always
had a warm welcome.
Now the people of West Yorkshire face a
chill wind. Job losses and threatened
austerity are ripping through communities.
There are siren voices who would like to
turn one community against another and rip
apart the fabric of our society.
I’m determined that that does not happen,
and I’m confident the majority of people are
too.
Rather than turning on our neighbours, we
should put the blame where it really lies.
The bankers have received tens of billions
of pounds to stop the collapse of the
financial system. But rather than lend
cheaply to those who need it, they are about
to hand themselves billions in bonuses.
The establishment politicians have
singularly failed to represent ordinary
people.
Nowhere is that more true than in Bradford.
The legacy of Gordon Brown’s government is a
disaster at home and abroad, with more and
more of our young people sent to fight an
unwinnable war for reasons that no one can
understand in Afghanistan. It is also to
bring the chilling prospect of the return of
a Thatcherite government in the form of
David Cameron and his Old Etonian and
millionaire pals.
The Respect Party is going to do everything
we can to oppose that and to stand up for
the real Labour values that Tony Blair and
Gordon Brown have abandoned.
We say the super-rich should be made to pay
their share, rather than working people
being squeezed to pay for an economic crisis
that is not of their making.
We have a real prospect of winning seats at
the next election and of getting strong
results in other areas.
One thing’s for sure, a vote for Respect
where we are standing is a vote to protect
vital services and jobs. A vote for the
others will be an invitation for them to
come and take what you rely on.
